Somehow it seems that all publishing information via blogs and online posts are coming from and are related to the publishing industries in Europe and the USA. I’m not sure why that is, maybe I haven’t focussed my reading glasses far enough, but be that as it may, sometimes, while sitting in front of my computer in the southern most city of Africa, frustration and insecurity can rear its pimpled head as the idea of how far we are away from it all becomes a reality. Just to give you and idea, recently I was sent a request from Sweden for a copy of my coffee-table book,
My excitement quickly evaporated once I discovered that the postage cost was going to be more than the selling price of the book, resulting in the international order never happening.
But recently I discovered something that was very exciting, rekindling my enthusiasm – an online library.
Magicblox has created a children’s book library platform. Depending on the different access passes, determines the number of books accessed per month, but 1 book per month can be read for free. Magicblox has partnered with Authors and Publishers from all over the world, offering a wide range of reading material for readers aged 1-13 at a very affordable cost. It is a fantastic idea in a rapidly changing industry; offering access to schools, teachers, librarians, parents, indeed anyone.
How does it work for an Author/Publisher?
Once your title has been accepted in EBook format it forms part of an online catalogue. The access passes are sold at varying costs and the sales of the passes are pooled together with 50% going to Magicblox, and the other 50% split up between the Publishers and Authors – according to the percentage of sales that their titles contributed to the pool. The royalties are either posted quarterly or paid out monthly via Paypal.
It’s a win win situation for all. Books are available internationally, from one platform, at a cost less than online book stores.
Somehow it now seems that I’m not sitting at the bottom of the world. Now with just a press of a button my books can become instantly available.
